Fueled by a constant barrage of attacks from far right pundits like Bill
O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh, the mainstream media and its alleged "liberal bias"
has done all it can to fuel the flames of controversy surrounding Colorado
University professor Ward Churchill. Calls for Churchill's firing are heard
daily from right-wing politicians, extremist talk radio show hosts and their
listeners and on the opinion pages of the Register in letters from conservative
reactionaries. They are all careful to say that they believe he has the right
to say what he says, he just shouldn't be allowed to say them as a professor
and blame the "tenure" system for protecting him.
On the other hand, there has been just about complete silence in regards to
comments made by another professor from the Rocky Mountain State. Dan Forsyth,
a professor of anthropology at Colorado State University-Pueblo, called
Mexicans "bitter and lazy" and said they are "raping the system" during a
classroom lecture/tirade. A student has filed a complaint with university
officials and her account has been backed up by another student.
Why all the silence? If the right was truly concerned about professors using
the classrooms as their personal bully-pulpits then you would expect them to be
outraged by Forsyth as well, but they haven't said a word. Once again the
right-wing shows that hypocrisy is their standard means of operation.
The message being sent to all those in academia is that you are free to spew
racism and preach a pro-imperialism and pro-conservative message, but don't you
dare challenge their philosophy or their agenda. And they say, "freedom's on
the march".
Surely you've seen the latest project from the creators of "WMD's", it's a fictional drama about freedom, democratic uprising and the nations of Lebanon and Syria. Come on people, I hope you are not buying this one. This has all the markings of a CIA/Mossad orchestrated operation. Ask yourself, where did all the new Lebanese flags and professionally made signs come from? Speaking of the signs, if this is truly Lebanese citizens protesting against the Syrians and Arabic is the official language of both nations, why are there so many signs in English?
These protests are nothing more than orchestrated events created for the benefits of U.S. viewing audiences. The truth is that theses demonstrations are the creation of Paul Wolfowitz/Richard Perle or their allies within Phillangist's and/or the Zionist terror machine aka Israel. They are the ones responsible for the murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and are now try to pin it on the Syrians. They want you to believe Hariri and the Syrians were enemies, and that is a lie.
I urge you all to look into the actions playing out in Lebanon. This is just a propaganda tool they hope will sway the public into supporting another "Hitler-esque" illegal invasion. I urge you all to stand with the side of truth and justice over the forces of tyranny. I urge you all to stand side-by-side with the Syrians and tell the imperialist invaders you will not stand with them, support them or allow them to wage war against the people of Syria.

Censorship at Oscars irks many
by
Tuesday 01 March 2005 12:36 PM GMT
What was not said at the Oscars on Sunday was probably more interesting than what was.
Hollywood's big night was beamed to the world with a five-second time delay, and broadcaster ABC ordered some controversial quips cut before the show, sparking debate about how far political correctness should go and freedom of speech controlled.
Comedian Robin Williams said it all when he walked on stage with a piece of white tape over his mouth.
Williams was to have performed a song lampooning conservative critic James Dobson, whose group had criticised cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants for appearing in a video it branded "pro-homosexual."
He was going to do it by concentrating on the dark underside of other cartoon characters, asking, for example whether Casper the Friendly Ghost wore that white sheet as a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
Objections
Marc Shaiman, who wrote Williams' original routine, said he decided to withdraw the material after ABC raised objections that would have led to him re-writing 11 of 36 lines. ABC declined to comment.
"It's ironic because I feel the song is silly and the situation is silly and yet on the other hand it's extremely serious," Shaiman said from New York. "This is the most blatant, immature censorship that I've ever come across."
Williams did eventually develop an act questioning cartoon characters' sexuality. But it was a pale imitation of some of the lines originally planned, and he looked pained performing it.
"The show lost what would have been the best minute-and-a-half they would have had last night," Shaiman said, before adding: "Where does the buck stop?"
Flagging ratings
Chris Rock, the edgy black comedian called in to host the show, and, some say, to boost flagging ratings, was also in trouble long before the Oscars got under way.
He previously joked that straight, black men did not watch the Oscars, drawing an angry response from commentators like Jake Lamar, an African American, who called Rock's comments "a massive generalisation" and "depressing."
Then Oscar producer Gil Cates weighed in, calling ABC's decision to introduce a time delay in transmitting from Kodak theatre a "terrible idea" and a concession to political correctness.

Here is my response to the Chris Rock bashing by the neo-con death cult letters to the editor in todays Orange County Register below:
Dear Editor:
What is it with the neo-cons, Christo-Fascists and the rest of the "Bushies" that believe statements critical of George W. Bush and/or his administration and policies are somehow out of bounds? These people like letter writers Hugo Folli and Nicole Roach, (Letters-to-the-Editor, "Rock couldn't resist chance to bash Bush", March 1, 2005), really need to get over themselves, or at least get a life and/or a sense of humor. They have risen Bush to a "Christ-like" icon and see any criticism of him as blasphemy.
Their attack against Chris Rock is ridiculous and petty. Rock was not serving as an agent for this so-called "Hollywood liberal elite" that the right-wing obsesses over and blames for all that is wrong in the world. Rock was doing as most on the big stage do, poking fun at those in power. Johnny Carson, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and the other hosts have all targeted past leaders, even "evil liberals" like Bill and Hillary Clinton or Jimmy Carter. To claim that this is "Bush-bashing" is simply "spin" by the right-wing.
After eight years of calling President Bill Clinton a liar, a murderer or a rapist, these people suddenly feel that any remark somewhat critical of the president is "un-patriotic" and "un-American". If we were to apply these same rules to them while Clinton was in the White House, they'd all be guilty of treason.

Letters - Rock couldn't resist the chance to bash Bush
Chris Rock's inability to be funny without having to use expletives must have forced him to rely on cheap shots at President Bush. He started out his monologue on the Oscars telecast Monday saying that he was not going to bash Bush, and then went on for several minutes with an amateurish attack on the president. The Oscars are supposed to be about recognizing the talent and work of those in the movie industry. Why is it that they just cannot pass up a chance to Bush-bash?
Heaven forbid that anyone would have come to the defense of the president - he would have been booed off the stage.
It was interesting to see the thin- skinned Sean Penn come to the defense of one of his pals when Rock made a joke about him. Making fun of one of their own is off-limits in Hollywood.
It is interesting to see this particular display every year to remind me of how far out of touch this group is with the rest of the country and everyday working people.

Instead of viewing the Academy Awards, I watched the Chris Rock School of Political Science.
I wonder how Rock would react if grocery clerks or bank tellers felt it was their place to tell him their stance on politics while he was using their services. Rock is a performer and that is all. His opinion of President George W. Bush means nothing to me.

How is everything? Keep fighting the good fight!
Hey, just wanted to pass along to you that when I passed Saddleback High School at about 2PM this afternoon I noticed a large number of anti-choice protesters along the sidewalks in front of the school. They were standing on the sidewalk holding large placards with slogans like "Worse than Hitler's Holocaust" and "America's Holocaust" with photos of dead fetuses on them.
As students passed by they were engaging in discussion with them. Because I was in a car I was unable to hear what the dialog was, but looking at the placards you can only imagine what they were saying to the youngsters.
This is disgusting and out of line. I believe that they need to keep moving if they are going to picket and they were stationary.
I, unlike the Bush administration, believe in the right of free speech. But if they can set up so-called "free speech zones" to keep anti-Bush demonstrators out of view, the same should be done to protect our children as the come and go from school.

The New York Daily News
Sunday 20 February 2005
Defense attorneys call it Brooklyn's Abu Ghraib. On the ninth floor of the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park, terrorism suspects swept off the streets after the Sept. 11 attacks were repeatedly stripped naked and frequently were physically abused, the Justice Department's inspector general has found.
The detainees - none of whom were ultimately charged with anything related to terrorism - alleged in sworn affidavits and in interviews with Justice Department officials that correction officers:
Humiliated them by making fun of - and sometimes painfully squeezing - their genitals.
Deprived them of regular sleep for weeks or months.
Shackled their hands and feet before smashing them repeatedly face-first into concrete walls - within sight of the Statue of Liberty.
Forced them in winter to stand outdoors at dawn while dressed in light cotton prison garb and no shoes, sometimes for hours.
"In December, they left me outside for more than four hours [wearing] only a jumpsuit and a light prison coat," Ahmed Khalifa, an Egyptian, told the Daily News. "I asked them to let me inside. They were laughing and pointing to me. When I finally got back inside, I felt like I had frostbite."
The Justice Department's inspector general has substantiated some of the prisoners' allegations - and some incidents were captured on videotape. But the Justice Department has declined to prosecute any federal correction officer at MDC.
"I was informed the videos amounted to nothing more than shoving, but no serious injuries," said one Justice Department official, who would speak only on condition he not be identified.
But Inspector General Glenn Fine, whose staff reviewed 380 MDC videotapes, reported in 2003 that "These tapes substantiated many of the detainees' allegations." Furthermore, the officers were not just a few bad apples but "a significant percentage of those who had regular contact with the detainees," Fine wrote last March.
The Justice Department currently is reconsidering its rejection of a News Freedom of Information request for the tapes, after the paper filed an appeal.
Meanwhile, interviews by The News with 12 ex-detainees - all but one now deported for visa violations - and a review of sworn complaints filed against the Bureau of Prisons adds shocking detail to the earlier findings of what occurred at MDC.
The picture that emerges mirrors some of the abuses the International Committee of the Red Cross denounced recently as "tantamount to torture" when inflicted by U.S. military authorities on prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Wael Kishk, an Egyptian student who was unable to walk, alleges he was beaten by guards on Feb. 15, 2002 - the same day he complained to a judge in open court about earlier mistreatment at MDC. When guards were returning him to the jail that day, he says they threw him into the back of a transport bus with his hands cuffed behind his back and his ankles shackled close together. Kishk, now in Cairo, recalled landing painfully on the floor, face down, unable to break his fall.
Back at MDC, said Kishk, the guards piled him into a wheelchair and took him to a room where they stripped him and "started stomping on me."
"There were three of them - with their leader, four," Kishk said. "They took all my clothes off and turned me on my stomach. Then, the leader put his foot on the back of my neck and told me, 'All of this is so you will stop playing games,'" an apparent reference to his statements in court.
Rami Dahmany, another Egyptian inmate, alleged he was injured by two guards - Michael McCabe and Christopher Witschel - when he complained about a strip search. They grabbed an already injured finger on his right hand and bent it painfully far back, then twisted it hard.
"They saw the finger was damaged," said Dahmany, speaking by phone from Egypt. "I still have an injury from that. I can't fold my hand. The finger stands up all the time."
McCabe and Witschel are accused of similar conduct in a lawsuit filed by other former inmates.
Witschel declined comment. McCabe could not be reached.
All the detainees complained of frequent strip searches - sometimes six a day - even though they remained continuously isolated in solitary confinement or were shackled when taken to court hearings.
Ehab ElMaghraby, a restaurant worker from Egypt, alleges in a lawsuit against the federal Bureau of Prisons that MDC guard Steven Barrere inserted a flashlight into his rectum during a strip search while other guards looked on. ElMaghraby said he saw blood on the withdrawn flashlight. Two other MDC officials - Michael DeFrancisco and Raymond Cotton - inserted a pencil into his rectum during other searches, ElMaghraby alleged.
Barrere's attorney, James Ryan, denounced ElMaghraby's allegations as "factually baseless." Cotton's attorney, Nicholas Kaizer, labeled ElMaghraby's charges "preposterous," adding, "ElMaghraby is trying to get rich through these fanciful claims."
Kishk, who has not filed any lawsuit, described strip searches in which a guard would grab his genitals "so hard, it hurt badly" - a charge echoed by Egyptian detainee Ashraf Ibrahim in a suit filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights.
"There's a lot more I can't describe," said Kishk. "It was very degrading."
Oded Ellner - one of five Israeli Jewish terrorist suspects - said he sought medical help after MDC's allegedly meager, often spoiled meals left him with severe dysentery symptoms. The doctor came with five guards and a camera, he said. She then ordered him to strip and shift his backside into a small space in the cell door so she could conduct a rectal exam from outside the cell.
"I'm a human being, not an animal!" Ellner said he shouted. "I have a right to an exam." The guards, he said, "just laughed," and all walked away.
The prisoners interviewed by The News were part of a group of 84 detainees jailed at MDC between Sept. 11, 2001, and September 2002. Some 1,200 such immigrants were jailed nationwide, including 400 in nearby Passaic County, N.J., where abuses were also reported.
Traci Billingsley, a spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Prisons, said that her agency began an investigation of abuse allegations last April - it is still ongoing - after the Justice Department decided not to prosecute anyone.
"Any substantiated incident will be addressed with appropriate disciplinary action and, where appropriate, criminal prosecution," she said.
Robert Nardoza, spokesman for the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District, which participated in the criminal investigation, said government efforts to prosecute alleged abusers at MDC were frustrated when six inmates who had complained of abuse chose deportation to their home countries rather than continued imprisonment until a possible trial at some point where they might testify as witnesses.
Nardoza referred further questions to the department's Civil Rights Division. He would not say whether prosecutors pursued options such as video depositions from abroad, closed-circuit TV testimony or even temporarily returning ex-inmates here to testify.
Civil Rights Division spokesman Eric Holland has refused to talk with The News.
None of the inmates who spoke to The News said they were ever asked to testify. All said they were ready to do so.
"It's a whitewash," said Steven Leegan, an attorney for Indian Muslim inmate Mohammed Jaweed Azmat. "This was a mini-Abu Ghraib in Brooklyn."
In fact, "It was worse," he said, "because these were not guardsmen thrown together but supposedly highly trained federal corrections officers doing the same thing long before we sent troops into Iraq."
"I was very trusting of the system," said Kishk. "I was infatuated and overtaken by your ideals of tolerance.
"I got the flip side of all the ideals I believed America held."

At some point during the day, whether on the Opinion Page in The Register, one
of the many right-wing attack shows on AM "hate radio" or network television,
the words "liberal media bias" will be spewed by conservatives over and over
again. It's time we put this tired myth to bed.
One study after another disproves the myth. Lexus Nexus searches however have
discovered a bias in the media's coverage, a conservative bias. With U.S.
media outlets rapidly being monopolized by parent corporations, all of whom
have conservative economic agendas, the slant will continue moving further to
the right.
Conservatives like to cite surveys that show that the majority of the on-air
talent or writers are Democrats or have liberal leanings. These leanings have
little impact on the editorial content of their shows or their papers, that
power comes from above. Am I to believe Rupert Murdoch, Michael Eisner, Time-
Warner AOL, General Electric or Viacom are liberals or grant liberals a free
reign within their media conglomerates?
Finally, if there is such a profound "liberal media bias", why do conservatives
vehemently oppose resurrecting the "Fairness Doctrine"? Does this not speak
volumes as to where the actual bias of the media lies? Therein lies the
answer, and common logic tells us there is no "liberal media bias". However
logic has no place in the conservative mind, myths and rhetoric rule the day.

Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa is the best, and in my opinion the only, choice for mayor of Los Angeles. I urge everyone to contact the campaign to donate time, money or anything you can, to help Antonio bring home the victory. When he wins, we all win. On October 11, 1985 the terroism that has long plagued the Middle East struck right in the heart of Santa Ana, California, some 191 months to the day prior to the attacks of 9-11-01. On that fateful day, Alex M. Odeh, the regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, was murdered when a pipe bomb exploded as he opened the door to his Santa Ana office. Odeh, a man well respected in both the Jewish and Arab communities, was targeted because of his political views and statements by him that some viewed as being too critical of the Israeli government in regards to their treatment of the Palestinian people. The cowards responsible for this despicable act have never been brought to justice and for political reasons probably never will be. Therefore, in the absence of justice on the part of the legal and judicial authorities, we ask that the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education provide a justice of their own: Honor Alex M. Odeh by naming a school after him. Don't let his death be his legacy to Santa Ana, rather let it be the education of our youth, which in turn may prevent such a shameles tragedy from occuring in the future. Lets not let the cowardly terroists have the last word.
