Lets Put the Myth to Bed
At some point during the day, whether on the Opinion Page in The Register, one
of the many right-wing attack shows on AM "hate radio" or network television,
the words "liberal media bias" will be spewed by conservatives over and over
again. It's time we put this tired myth to bed.
One study after another disproves the myth. Lexus Nexus searches however have
discovered a bias in the media's coverage, a conservative bias. With U.S.
media outlets rapidly being monopolized by parent corporations, all of whom
have conservative economic agendas, the slant will continue moving further to
the right.
Conservatives like to cite surveys that show that the majority of the on-air
talent or writers are Democrats or have liberal leanings. These leanings have
little impact on the editorial content of their shows or their papers, that
power comes from above. Am I to believe Rupert Murdoch, Michael Eisner, Time-
Warner AOL, General Electric or Viacom are liberals or grant liberals a free
reign within their media conglomerates?
Finally, if there is such a profound "liberal media bias", why do conservatives
vehemently oppose resurrecting the "Fairness Doctrine"? Does this not speak
volumes as to where the actual bias of the media lies? Therein lies the
answer, and common logic tells us there is no "liberal media bias". However
logic has no place in the conservative mind, myths and rhetoric rule the day.
