Just another day in the world of the hypocritical right!
Fueled by a constant barrage of attacks from far right pundits like Bill
O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh, the mainstream media and its alleged "liberal bias"
has done all it can to fuel the flames of controversy surrounding Colorado
University professor Ward Churchill. Calls for Churchill's firing are heard
daily from right-wing politicians, extremist talk radio show hosts and their
listeners and on the opinion pages of the Register in letters from conservative
reactionaries. They are all careful to say that they believe he has the right
to say what he says, he just shouldn't be allowed to say them as a professor
and blame the "tenure" system for protecting him.
On the other hand, there has been just about complete silence in regards to
comments made by another professor from the Rocky Mountain State. Dan Forsyth,
a professor of anthropology at Colorado State University-Pueblo, called
Mexicans "bitter and lazy" and said they are "raping the system" during a
classroom lecture/tirade. A student has filed a complaint with university
officials and her account has been backed up by another student.
Why all the silence? If the right was truly concerned about professors using
the classrooms as their personal bully-pulpits then you would expect them to be
outraged by Forsyth as well, but they haven't said a word. Once again the
right-wing shows that hypocrisy is their standard means of operation.
The message being sent to all those in academia is that you are free to spew
racism and preach a pro-imperialism and pro-conservative message, but don't you
dare challenge their philosophy or their agenda. And they say, "freedom's on
the march".
